"Nuno Alvares Pereira, also known as Saint Constable or Saint Nuno of Saint Mary, was born on June 24, 1360, in Portugal.  Saint Nuno was an excellent soldier and won all the battles in which he participated.  He was appointed Constable of the Kingdom, that is supreme commander of the army, by Joao of Avis.  Saint Nuno won the Battle of Aljubarrota which consolidated Portuguese independence.  After the death of his wife, Saint Nuno dedicated himself to religious life and entered the Order of Carmel, a religious institution that he founded in 1389, and where he remained until his death in 1431.  Saint Nuno was beatified by Pope Benedict XV on January 23, 1918 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on April 26, 2009.  His feast day is November 6th.
