Did the world really need another fly fishing / fly- tying book?
Why?
I have read many books and articles that recommend that the beginning fly tyer should invest in the best fly tying vise he or she can afford.
When a dollar figure is attached to a “good” beginner’s vise it is often in the to price range.
The rationale is that a low-cost tool can be more difficult to use, and will distract from the fly tying experience.
I have even seen the total cost of entering fly-tying stated as 0 to 0.
Yikes!
I take a very different approach in my recommendation.
If you build your own vise and tie flies on it, you are well on your way to years of enjoying fly-tying and fishing.
A low entry price into fly-tying allows you to view it not as an investment, but a pleasurable activity that cost about what it would cost to go to the movies with snacks.
I have led 4-H-ers, boy scouts, and classes of high school students in building their own fly-tying vises.
