Here are three nice fossil Pea Crabs, Pinnixa galliheri, from the Miocene, about 8 million years ago.  From the Monterey Formation, San Luis Obispo County, California.  On their original plate, which measure about 4.6 inches, and it weighs 7.25 oz.
There are 2 "large" pea crabs on one side, each with some touch-up for better presentation. There is a smaller pea crab on the back side, with no touch-up or restoration.
These little creatures are small but fascinating. Modern ones are known as Kleptoparasites. They live as a parasite inside of clams, oysters, etc. The crab will hide in the gills of an oyster, and when some food comes the oyster's way, the crab steals it for itself, if possible.  People sometimes will find one in their seafood, particularly oysters.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself,  is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.  100% of our COA’s include a photo of the exact item you purchased, right on the COA itself, so it can’t ever be placed with a wrong item.  We suggest that in addition to relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
