1800's Madonna Religious Wall 3-D statue
Santos, or "bultos" as they are also known, are devotional statues which were generally
carved from wood and embellished with gesso, polychrome and sometimes gold "estodfado."
These figures were often vested in fine silk costumes with elaborately detailed embroideries.
Much like retablos, santos were displayed and venerated in home altars and churches.
The range in style is enormous, as broad as the myriad of Catholic saints which they represent

This Santos is made of 2 wood carvings, the other thicker has the Virgin Mary
with the floral carved backing.
This piece is 2 3/4 inches thick and is attached to a rear floral carved backing
that measures 1/2 inch thick.

*  there is one floral outer edge that is missing some wood, also some minor chips of wood
*  this carving is very old and the detail is terrific
*  the back wood shows an age crack but none of this detracts from this great piece
