Forgive me, but St Brendan the Navigator (484 AD - 577 AD) reminds me of this Seamus Heaney poem. In Irish folktales of antiquity there are stories passed on about sightings of a ship in the sky and one of the crewman is drowning when he falls onto land. The annals say: when the monks of Clonmacnoise
Were all at prayers inside the oratory
A ship appeared above in the air.
The anchor dragged along behind so deep
It hooked itself into the altar rails
And then, as the big hull rocked to a standstill,
A crewman shinned and grappled down the rope
And struggled to release it. But in vain.
‘This man can’t bear our life here and will drown,’
The Abbott said, ‘unless we help him.’ So
They did, the freed ship sailed, and the man climbed
back
Out of the marvellous as he had known it.
“BRANDANO”. Saint Brendan The Navigator. Well known in Ireland. He is one of the early monastic Saints. He did sail in the Atlantic Ocean and made various voyages around Ireland and possibly beyond. Respectful and dignified depiction of Saint. He holds onto a large cross, a rosary and a skull.
Dimension: 9 1/3 inches high.
Material: red clay - terra cotta. Nice heavy feel.
Condition: Very good. Some light handling. Very light dust in nooks and crannies.
Signed or stamped along back center of figure is Initial “L” (next letter not clear) then last name “Scarpelli”. I believe this piece to be by Luisa Benatti Scarpelli of Italy.
