Tiny Travertine Crab Fossil From Turkey, Fossil Travertine Crab Potamon

Description

This is a nice fossil crab Potamon carapace fossil from Turkey. This specimen has been preserved as a natural outer cast in its own “travertine cave”. This crustacean has amazing detail and claw and carapace preservation.
Travertine is a limestone that forms near mineral springs. These crabs were found when big blocks of travertine stone are cut and used as building materials. These fossils are estimated to be 300,000-400,000 years old and are from the Pleistocene.
Width of crab across legs: approximately 0.55 inches (1.4 cm)
Width of stone: approximately 2.25 inches (5.715 cm)
